Boys basketball: Indians fall in playoff opener

The John Jay boys basketball team fell short in its Section 1 Class A outbracket game on Wednesday, losing to Riverside, 61-44, in Yonkers.

The Indians (5-13) led 16-14 after one quarter but were outscored 16-0 in the second quarter to trail 30-16 at the half.

John Jay played a strong third quarter, outscoring Riverside 22-17, and got to within seven points in the fourth quarter but went cold in the final period, both  from the floor  (2-for-11) and at the free-throw line (2-for-7). Riverside put the game away with a 9-0 run over the final minute and half.

Joe Kells led John Jay with 16 points and Matt Bernstein had 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Jack Paccione had a great all-around game with seven points, 11 rebounds, six blocked shots and three assists. Nick Kiger had seven points and eight rebounds. Jack Weiller added two points.

For Riverside, Ian Parker came off the bench to scored 27 points, including four three-pointers, and also led his team with 12 rebounds.
