Elementary schools coordinate districtwide curriculum

Meadow Pond Elementary School principal Carolann Castellano and Lewisboro Elementary School principal Cristy Harris presented the board with the master schedule for all district elementary schools for the 2012-13 year.

In light of state mandates to curriculum, such as the common core, a number of changes have taken place to accommodate time restraints. More time will be allotted for state-mandated Response to Intervention (RTI) strategies that aim to target specific student needs. Teachers will also be receiving more time to coordinate among themselves across subjects and grade levels to streamline professional learning communities (PLCs). The district will be putting a greater emphasis on education for sustainability.

Board members Janet Harckham and Marjorie Schiff praised the elementary schedule as a creative solution and unique standard that will raise the bar for education throughout all the elementary schools.

“This is huge in terms of absolutely having a standard that is ours,” Ms. Harckham said. “When my kids were in school the curriculum was the same but the schools were not aligned; the curriculums were not aligned.”
