The John Jay wrestling team opened the season in strong fashion on Saturday at the Rye Tournament, sweeping all five of its matches to win the team championship.

The Indians (5-0) had wins over Westlake, Rye, Hackley, Beacon and Greeley, all by at least 20 points.

Six John Jay wrestlers finished the day undefeated and were crowned tourney champs — Alec Beresin (120 pounds), Alex Lambiotte (132), Josh Bauer (145 pounds), Billy Gossett (195), Ethan Smith (285 pounds) and Louis Talia (220). Gossett and Bauer both won all five matches by pin, while Lambiotte, Beresin and Smith had four pins each.

Junior Damien Franco (170), freshman Chris Kelly (113) and sophomores Brian Kershner (126) and Ari Fay (138) all went 4-1, with Fay coming away with the award for most valuable tenth grader.

Seniors Ben Jadow (152) and Giancarlo Geniso (160) were 3-2, while classmate Sam Gordon went 3-0. Billy Greene (182) was 1-1 for the day.
