The John Jay boys and girls lacrosse teams both advanced to the Section 1 Class B finals with wins on Tuesday in the semifinals.

The boys team rallied for a 6-5 overtime win at Rye, on Shawn Smith’s goal with 34 seconds left in the first overtime.

The John Jay girls had an easier time, routing Ursuline 22-11 in New Rochelle.

The Class B girls championship game will be on Thursday at 5:30 at Mamaroneck High School. John Jay (13-4-1) will play top-seeded Yorktown (15-2).

The Class B boys championship game also is a John Jay-Yorktown finale, as the Indians (12-6) play the top-seeded Huskers (16-2) at 3 on Thursday at White Plains High School.

In Tuesday’s win over second-seeded Ursuline, the John Jay girls were led by Molly O’Reilly with six goals and five assists, and Amanda Flayhan with five goals and three assists.

Sarah Lang had three goals and three assists and Delaney Spencer three goals and one assist. Dakota Adamec also netted three goals. Mary McAvey had two goals and one assist and Hanna Bocklet one goal.

In the boys game against the second-seeded Rye, the Garnets led 5-3 with six minutes left in the third quarter, but John Jay rallied with two goals in a span of 20 seconds, by Smith and Frazier Bostwick, to tie the game at 5-5 with 2:18 left in the quarter.

Both teams had several excellent chances in the scoreless fourth quarter. Rye won the face-off to start the overtime, but Rob Looney came up with a big save for the Indians with under two minutes to go.

With under a minute left, Smith took a pass from Bostwick but hit the pipe. The ball rebounded out to Jake Chintz, who dumped the ball back to Smith in front for the game-winner.

Bostwick and Smith each had two goals for John Jay, while Brandon Lee each had a goal and two assists and Chintz had a goal and one assist. Ryan Lee also had an assist.

Looney had a big game in goal with 14 saves.

Katonah-Lewisboro school district voters passed the 2013-14 budget on Tuesday, May 21, by a margin of 1,124-802 (all numbers are unofficial), or 58.4% of the vote. The $114,879,543 budget represents a 1.67% budget-to-budget increase and a tax levy increase of 1.34%, under the state’s property tax cap.

The second proposition, a $1,724,300 purchase of 12 78-passenger buses and one wheelchair-accessible van, passed by a vote of 1,122-791.

“We’re really grateful that the budget passed overwhelmingly,” board Vice President Charles Day said, adding that it was impressive for anything to pass by such a large margin considering the contentious atmosphere in the district.

Richard Stone, Jeff Holbrook and Dr. Peter Treyz were elected to the school board. Mark Lipton, currently board president, finished fourth in the voting. A Pound Ridge resident, he was seeking his third consecutive term.

Mr. Stone (1,233 votes) of Cross River and Mr. Holbrook (1,160) of Pound Ridge are first-time board members. Dr. Treyz (1,124) of South Salem was elected to his third straight term.

Mr. Stone expressed his excitement to begin working on the board.

“It’s all about finances,” he said, “but I’m also interested in making sure the quality of the schools doesn’t decline in any way. My son got a great education here. It’s my obligation to make sure every kindergartener has the same experience.”

Mr. Holbrook said that he is “very excited and looking forward to get to work on the challenging issues that are facing the district. I’m very appreciative of all of the support I received from friends and neighbors. I feel fortunate to be part of such a great community.”

Mr. Day thanked Mr. Lipton and outgoing board member Peter Breslin for their service on the board. He welcomed the return of Dr. Treyz and the arrivals of Mr. Stone and Mr. Holbrook.

Mr. Day noted the high turnover of the board in recent years (the 2013-14 board will feature five members who were elected in the last three years).

“That’s going to be really interesting,” he said.

On Wednesday, May 8, the Lewisboro Seniors were most fortunate to have the Lewisboro Garden Club come to the meeting and instruct us on how to build, maintain and care for a terrarium which grew herbs.

Attending was their president, Rose Bonanno, vice president, Lisa Wickersham, treasurer, Bev Scott, program share, Ellen Snyder, and two of their illustrious members, Karen Rossi and Maureen Koehl. They brought with them many bags of potting soil, big containers to hold the potting soil, growing plants of thyme, basil, lemon thyme, mint, Italian parsley, sweet woodruff, and marigold.

The seniors’ tables were covered with plastic, and each table had a carton of potting soil, and a trowel to fill the terrariums that had been placed before each senior. When the terrariums were filled with soil, the Garden Club members brought to each table the herbs to plant in the soil.

We busily planted these herbs: basil, mint, thyme, parsley, sweet woodruff and marigold, into the terrariums. As we were doing this we were told interesting facts about these herbs. Mint, if planted outside, had a tendency to reproduce and take up lots of territory. Sweet woodruff did the same, but also was used in flavoring wine. Marigolds were great for drawing bees, but repelled destructive insects and small animals.

We were given handouts on how to use and take care of each herb. Basil “complements any tomato dish; flowering will turn the leaves bitter.” Parsley: “Biennial: Use in almost any dish, especially soups and stews.” Thyme: “Add to flavor garlic bread; use it in soups.” It was also suggested that the leaves be frozen, rather than dried, which “preserves the flavor better.”

Then there was a question-and-answer session. Ms. Bonanno: They can be repotted if they grow too big. Do not overwater. If the weather will not be freezing, one can put the terrarium outside. If the plants grow too big, pinch the top leaves to make them denser.

All of us potential herb-growers were most thankful and grateful to the Lewisboro Garden Club. We thanked them with a round of applause. And as we each left carrying our terrarium, it reminded me how I felt leaving class with a project in hand, well done and proud of it. I felt years younger, but alas it was only temporary.

Several John Jay sports teams will be in Section 1 playoff games in the coming days.

The John Jay boys and girls lacrosse teams will play in the Section 1 Class B semifinals on Tuesday.

The John Jay baseball team begins the Section 1 Class A tournament on Wednesday with a home game.

The girls lacrosse team travels to play second-seeded Ursuline in New Rochelle at 4:30 on Tuesday, with a trip to the section finals on the line. John Jay, the third seed, beat Fox Lane 9-7 on Saturday in the round of eight. The finals are Thursday at 5:30 at Mamaroneck High School.

The third-seeded boys lacrosse team is at second-seeded Rye, also at 4:30, looking to advance to the section championship game for the tenth straight year. The Indians routed Nyack, 16-2, in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The finals are Thursday at 3 at White Plains High School.

The baseball team is seeded sixth in the tourney, and will play either Poughkeepsie or Nyack on Wednesday. The Indians are coming off a 12-8 regular season that saw them win the Conference 1 League B title with a 7-1 league record.

With a win, John Jay would advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday against the winner of the game between third-seeded Eastchester or the winner of Tuesday’s Rye-Panas outbracket game.

In what was a rubber match Saturday in Litchfield, Conn., between the HVAL’s top two teams, Harvey defeated The Forman School, 6-3, to win the 2013 HVAL crown.

Harvey and Forman came into the championship game after each team had won on the opposing team’s courts by identical 5-4 scores in their regular-season matche-ups. Once again, it came down to doubles with the number-one pairing of Brent Feldman and Bradley Rothschild of Rye Brook playing a hard-fought match that went down to the wire before they pulled out a thrilling tie-breaker, 7-5.

In singles play, Feldman, Rothschild, Harry Solomon of Bedford, and Zach Schwartz of New Rochelle earned victories in their individual matches. In addition to the doubles victory of Feldman and Rothschild, Bryan Krosser of Chappaqua and Alec Roslin of Armonk defeated their Forman opponents, 8-4.

For Feldman, Harvey’s top singles player since his freshman year, Saturday’s championship game was his final match for the Cavaliers. He began playing varsity tennis as an eighth grader as the team’s number-two varsity player. In the five years as a varsity player for The Harvey School, Feldman lost only one match. He was involved in three conference championships and one runner-up finish.

Harvey’s final record was 11-3.
