The John Jay hockey team won its first-ever section title on Sunday with a 5-1 win over Rye in the Section 1 Division 2 championship game at Brewster Ice Arena.
The top-seeded Indians (21-1-1) avenged their only loss of the season.
John Tobin gave John Jay a 1-0 lead with a goal late in the first period, and Shawn Smith’s power-play goal made it 2-0 less than two minutes into the second period.
The lead was 2-1 going into the third period, which the Indians controlled, eventually icing the game with three goals in a span of four minutes to make it 5-1 with 2:38 left. Mark Leprine scored two of those goals and Lucas Prestamo scored the other.
