District committee praised for composting program

Katonah-Lewisboro school board Vice President Charles Day, a member of the district’s Sustainability Committee, applauded a successful composting program at Katonah Elementary School that is being extended into the other three elementary schools and possibly John Jay Middle School next year, he said at a recent board meeting.

The district is also gaining ground in its efforts to reduce the amount of waste and contribution to wasteful practices by reducing the number of water bottles being used, sold and ultimately thrown out at John Jay High School.

“They are selling 8,000 fewer water bottles a month, and that is an incredible number,” he said.

The committee and administration are also taking initiatives to reduce the district’s paper consumption by 10% a year in addition to getting off catalog lists that require recycling of stacks of paper catalogs that are already available online.
