Student board member Sam Gordon brought up a number of issues among students at the school board meeting on Nov. 15. He said that Ultimate Frisbee Club members are concerned about their status.
As a club they are not entitled to certain benefits that varsity sports have, such as access to practice fields. Currently the club practices on a small strip of land in the John Jay High School parking lot. In addition, as a club they are not exempt from physical education classes and do not receive funding for the tournaments and must rely on sponsors.
Another concern Mr. Gordon raised regarded showers at the high school, an issue he felt personally as a wrestler.
“We will turn them on 10 to 15 minutes in advance and after getting out of the weight room they will still not be hot,” he said. “Some kids, as a result of this, will end up not showering.”
Superintendent Dr. Paul Kreutzer said both issues will be addressed.
