Robert E. Somes, Jr., a former resident of Lake Katonah, died on Sunday, Nov. 11. He was 67.
Mr. Somes was born on June 9, 1945, in Philadelphia to the late Robert and Irene Somes.
He graduated from Cheltenham High School in Abington, Pa., then earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance from Babson College in 1967.
After college Mr. Somes became a sixth-generation member of the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Simon Lake during the Vietnam War. After his military service he spent many years employed as a credit and financial analyst for Fidelity Union Trust Company in Newark, N.J.; an assistant treasurer of ACLI International in White Plains; and an accountant for Hedge Ware in Mount Kisco. Over the years he obtained insurance and real estate licenses.
Mr. Somes lived in Lake Katonah for more than 20 years before retiring to Southport, N.C. While living in Lake Katonah, he was active in coaching Little League baseball, soccer and in serving on the Lake Katonah Board.
He was an avid bridge and pinochle player with local groups in Southport besides enjoying his hobbies of stamp collecting, charting stocks and fishing.
Mr. Somes is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth L. Somes; son, Robert E. Somes III, of Banner Elk, N.C.; daughter, Laura H. Nixon, of Utica, N.Y.; brothers, Gary and James Somes; sister, Sherry Somes; and grandchildren, Olivia, Ashley and Eric Nixon and Lanae Somes.
Arrangements were made by Wilmington Funeral and Cremation of Wilmington. There will be a summer memorial service held in Somesville, Maine.
